Composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils of Salvia fruticosa and Salvia ringens (Lamiaceae)

Background/Aim. Plant essential oils (EOs) can have a significant antibacterial effect especially through additive or synergistic action as antibiotic adjuvants. We investigated the composition and activity of EOs two species genus Salvia (S) from Greece with aim to determine their antimicrobial well in combination selected antibiotics. Methods. The aerial parts wild-growing S. fruticosa ringens were subjected steam distillation obtained analyzed by gas chromatography chromatography/mass spectrometry. broth-microdilution method was used order minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) on seven strains bacteria one yeast. Antimicrobial EO antibiotics checkerboard estimated calculating fractional concentration (FIC) each component index (FICI). Results. Dominant transthujone (54.2%) for i t w ?-pinene (28.1%). MICs both range 200 ?g/mL > 500 ?g/mL. strongest achieved against Bacillus subtilis Candida albicans. According FICI values, had ciprofloxacin most bacterial but not amikacin. Conclusion. showed modest activity. However, oil promising ciprofloxacin.
